Discussion:

  1. Jessica Vollmer brought up the need for a Math Club Constitution. She mentioned the need for goals and the focus of the club.
  2. Dr. Wildenberg arrived to mention a computer programming contest. He wanted to see if there were math students interested in participating with computer science students. The contest is being held in Providence, R.I. The students who participate will get to stay in a hotel for a fun weekend. The students would depart on Thursday April 26, 2003. There will be a key note speaker, John Conway. John Conway is a mathematician who wrote the novel Surreal Numbers. If students are interested they need to contact Dr. Wildenberg.
  3. Jessica Vollmer and Dr. Johnson brought up the need for club officers. Jessica Vollmer is President. Gretchen Lathers is Vice President. Shannon Newpher is Secretary. Angela Yost is Treasurer. The new officers will work on creating the club constitution. Once completed copies will be sent to the rest of the club for group approval.
  4. Jessica Vollmer and Dr. Johnson discussed the Panel of Speakers event. The club should talk with both Dr. Muench and Dr. Wildenberg about possible alumni speakers. A tentative date has been set for February or March of 2003. The event should be approximately one hour long. There should be about three speakers so that they could each speak for about 20 minutes. The list of St. John Fisher College alumni is to be posted on Blackboard. All club members get to choose the speakers. Everyone will post their top five speakers on Blackboard. Angela Yost mentioned the need to give the speakers some sort of gift for speaking.
  5. The play “Proof” is an “on your own event”. Information for the play will be posted on Blackboard.
  6. Also to be posted on Blackboard a discussion board where the mathematics professors can send in their recreational math related activities.
  7. Agree to meet with the other clubs at the end of the semester if the details can be worked out. November 21, 2002 is a potential date for the end of year group meeting.
  8. Next math club meeting is scheduled for November 14, 2002 in the math center. We will need to change the dates on the flyers created by Jessica Vollmer and arrange for food and drinks.
